MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.- The Mounties continued their season on Tuesday in Florida as they took on St. Thomas University. In their second match of the season, the Mounties found their success on the defensive side of the ball and were able to pick up their first win in a game that came down to the wire, 1-0.
The Mounties looked to bounce back from their Saturday season opener and that is exactly what they did. From the first kick, the Mountaineers controlled the tempo of the match using their tenacious defense to keep St. Thomas from getting into any sort of a rhythm. The Mounties started their attack early with Brooke Ford getting an early shot that went just high off the crossbar. The Mounties were able to amount four total shots in the first half with two being on goal but were unable to find the back of the net.
As the second half proceeded, it was a similar story for the Mounties as they were able to control the pace of the game. The Mounties successfully shutdown the Bobcats of St. Thomas not allowing them to get a shot off for the entire 90 minutes. The Mounties were finally rewarded for their stellar defensive play as Lanaeya Botelho was able to find the back of the net off of an assist from Kana Mateaki in the 80th minute.
The Mounties would ultimately win the match 1-0 to bring them to a 1-1 record in the early 2022 season. The Mounties will look to build off of their first win of the season as they will be back in action Thursday, Aug. 25 as they take on Ave Maria University at 10 a.m PT / 1 p.m ET in Miami Gardens, Fla.
