Corban Men's Soccer Secures Back-to-Back Shutouts with Solo Goal Win Over Concordia (Neb.)

SALEM, Ore. – For the second time in as many days, the Corban University Men's Soccer team (2-0, 0-0) posted another shutout victory at the Corban Jamboree, collecting a 1-0 victory over the Concordia University (Neb.) Bulldogs (1-1, 0-0) at the Outdoor Athletic Complex on Corban's campus.

“Today was a good result against another strong team,” Corban Head Coach Tim Kagey shared on his team’s victory.

“Our group has a lot of passion. We will continue to learn from the mistakes we made today, and improve for our next game on Wednesday,” Kagey concluded.

An absolute defensive scrum took place at the Outdoor Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon, with the Warriors and Bulldogs gutting out 90 minutes of hard knock soccer against each other. The first 20 minutes of the contest went hardly noticed, with both teams exchanging possessions and nobody really finding consistency on the attack.

Until finally, in the 27th minute, sophomore midfielder/forward Andres Labate broke through for his second game-winning goal of the week. Being left alone one-on-one off the left-side of the penalty box, Labate beat his defender off a quick step towards the middle of the field, and soared a rocket of a ball into the bottom left corner of the goal, the only place Concordia goalkeeper Callum Goldsmith couldn’t reach.

Labate’s early score would eventually become the only score of the contest, and quite possibly the best-look any team would receive, as both Goldsmith and Warriors’ graduate student goalkeeper Quinn McCallion would hold defensive MasterClass sessions the rest of the afternoon.

Goldsmith would go on wrangle three saves in total of the eight total shots that the Warriors managed, allowing just the one goal from Labate. Meanwhile, McCallion and his defensive line absolutely locked down any Concordia presence, as not a single one of the Bulldog’s three shots went McCallion’s direction in goal.

Opportunities for either team came primarily from the free kicks via fouls, with Corban recording 13 to Concordia’s 12. Only six corner kicks were taken the entire day, as five went for the Warriors and just one for the Bulldogs.

The Corban Men’s Soccer team will be back in action next Wednesday, August 31st, as they play their only road non-conference contest of the 2022 regular season right across town at Willamette University, beginning at 7pm PDT.
