SALEM, Ore. – Northwest picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, shutting out 25th-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) in the Corban Jamboree.
Tyler Hopp and Michael Kot came up big for the Eagles in the victory.
Northwestern was awarded a penalty kick in the 43rd minute but Kot came up with the save to keep the game scoreless.
After a scoreless first half, NU got on the board in the 62nd minute. Hopp got the goal with an assist from Elliot Misic.
The NU defense remained up to the task and the one goal was enough. Kot finished with four saves on the day.
"I'm pleased with the effort and good to get the win," said NU Head Coach Gary McIntosh. "We had to work for this victory, it was not easy. Michael Kot had a great game in goal, coming up huge to save a penalty kick to keep us in the game. And we did a lot of good things today that gave us chances and we've got things we need to work on. It was great to see our captain Elliot share the ball and a great pass to Tyler Hopp for the goal. Overall, a very good team win today and I'm proud of the boys for the work they put in."
The Eagles were out-shot 15-7 but Northwest had six shots on goal to the Raiders' five. Hopp placed two shots on goal with Daniel Amador, Jacen Stein, Max Herrig, and Misic testing the NC keeper once each.
NU returns to action on Sept. 4 with a trip to Forest Grove, Oregon, to take on Pacific University.
