SALEM, Ore. – The streak continues for the Corban University Men’s Soccer team (4-0, 0-0), who toppled the Lions of Soka University of America (0-2-2) by a final score of 5-0 for their fourth-straight win, and in turn, their fourth-straight shutout.
“It was great to get another result that we were looking for,” Warriors’ Head Coach Tim Kagey shared about tonight’s contest.
“This is a very special group, and we look to continue getting better as we head into our next match,” Kagey went on to say.
Warrior fans have witnessed three separate Corban men’s soccer matches played out at the OAC since the beginning of the 2022 season, all of which have led to very different storylines. There was a Top-25 lockdown over Northwestern, a defensive showdown with Concordia (Neb.), and now the offensive explosion everyone saw looming in the shadows.
It took less than six minutes for the Warriors to strike, as a beautiful feed from sophomore midfielder Alexis Luna provided sophomore defender Edson Jimenez with a clean look at Soka’s goal, and struck a clean ball to earn the eventual game-winner for Corban.
Jimenez returned the favor just seven minutes later, as he set up senior forward Reggie Reyes from just past midfield for a breakaway opportunity, and the Woodburn, Ore. native scorched a ball past the diving hands of Lions’ goalkeeper Eric Aparicio to grow the Warrior lead to 2-0 in the 13th minute.
The opportunity for Jimenez to find his way into scoring position came again with just over a minute passing on the scoreboard, as Luna found him once again in the Lions’ penalty box for their second goal and assist, respectively, of the evening.
Luna must have made a mental decision at halftime that he needed to add to his scoring tally tonight as well, as he would go on to score the final two Corban goals, both assisted from sophomore midfielder/defender Andres Labate. The first of Luna’s scores came on a line directly from Labate in play, while the second was a perfectly place corner kick off the foot of Labate that Luna worked into the goal right in front of Aparicio.
Jimenez and Luna recorded a pair of goals each to earn braces, while Luna tacked on two assists to Jimenez’ single dime. Reyes led all players with four shots, all of which were on goal, including his second goal of the season.
Warriors’ star graduate student goalkeeper Quinn McCallion (4-0) recorded his fourth shutout of the season, needing just three saves tonight to keep his scoreless streak alive. Aparicio (0-2-2) recorded nine saves against the relentless Warrior offense, but allowing five goals resulted in his second loss of the season.
The Warriors return to the field next Thursday, September 8th, where they will host Bethesda University of California (0-2-1) in their final non-conference tune-up before the start of conference play.
