McMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Corban University Men’s Wrestling team kicked off the new year at the Mat ‘Cat Invitational earlier today, hosted by NCAA DIII Linfield University, where the Warriors rolled to a dominate first place team victory with 193.0 team points, highlighted by seven weight class winners and 14 podium placements.
Corban was among the ranks of multiple NCAA DIII universities, including host Linfield, Pacific University, Western Washington University, Simon Fraser University, and Pacific Lutheran University. Fresno State University (NCAA DI), Simpson University (NAIA), and Big Bend Community College (NWAC) were also among the schools that sent wrestlers to McMinnville for today’s invitational tournament.
“Awesome team effort all around today! It was great to see the guys back at it after the break and show they haven’t lost a step,” Warriors’ Interim Head Coach Kary Hadden shared following his team’s first tournament victory of the season.
“We just continue to show why we have one of the most dominant freshmen classes in the entire NAIA, along with the seasoned veterans that help lead this amazing group of young men in God’s glory!” Hadden went on to say.
Corban freshman Brayden Boyd and Bo Davis each secured the first weight class championships in the 125 and 133 groups, respectively. Body defeated Simpson’s Nicholas Stringer in a 4-0 decision to improve his overall record to 17-4 on the season, while Davis earned a tight 6-4 decision over Simpson’s Christopher Guizar to launch himself to a 16-3 season record.
Fellow freshmen Blake Runion and Luke Jensen each earned themselves trips to the 141-weight class championship match, where Runion defeated Jensen 10-9 in a nailbiter between teammates. Freshman and Pacific transfer Brody Piercy took the fifth-place match in the same weight class against Linfield’s Jacob Jarvis to earn his fourth match win of the season.
Freshman Jordan Piercy earned a forfeit win Western Washington’s Gabe Duchesneau in the 149-weight class to take home a fifth-place award, while freshman Braden Ruby fell via pin in the 133-weight class for sixth overall.
The No. 3 overall NAIA wrestler at the 165-weight class, Corban redshirt sophomore David Rubio, sped through his division to easily take the first-place trophy, capped with a pin over Big Bend CC’s Liam Lucas in 2:36.
Junior Matthew Bartlett took down Linfield’s Price Pothier in the 174 class handily with a 15-5 major division, while freshman Austin Mattson was all over a 16-0 technical fall over Western Washington’s Ian McAbee.
The Corban dynamic duo at the 184-weight division, redshirt freshmen German Munoz and Lucas Rivera, each had themselves a day over the Mat ‘Cat field, as Munoz earned a 6-2 decision to take the weight class over Simpson’s Malachi Dowdell and Rivera rebounded to earn a fifth-place finish by pinning Pacific’s Michael Madden.
Sophomore Tyson Stover demonstrated why he’s the NAIA 16th-ranked wrestler in the 197-weiht class with a decisive 18-2 technical fall win in 5:48 over Fresno State’s Luis Jauregui in the championship bout, while junior Sven Lukner completed the Warriors’ dominate showing with a second-place overall finish in the 285-class.
