Bragg Holds on for Men’s Individual Title, Raiders Squeeze Out Team Championship in Close Finish at Coastal Collegiate Classic

GLENEDEN BEACH, Ore. – A tightly contested tournament came down to the wire out on the Oregon coast in the final round of the 2023 Coastal Collegiate Classic, where the Southern Oregon University starting squad took home the team title by eight strokes over tourney hosts Corban University. On the individual side, Warriors' senior Jackson Bragg was able to fend off some last minute competition for the individual title, as he shot 219 (+6) over the three-day tournament to earn his first title while a member of the Corban men's golf program.

"It was great being able to see Jackson handle the pressure of maintaining a lead and not sweat the small stuff," Warriors' head coach Charlie Marshall shared shortly after Bragg received his award. "As a team, we competed much better this season compared to last year's tournament, falling just shy of the team title this time around. Overall, a very successful appearance for the men."

The Raiders (903) were able to cling to their narrow lead through the full tourney results after entering the last day with a two stroke advantage, as multiple student-athletes were able to turn in red numbers on their score sheet to clinch a tight contest with the Warriors (911). The College of Idaho (922) hopped from fifth to third with a solid final round performance, while NCAA DIII Texas Lutheran University (925) concluded their trip to the west coast just three strokes shy of a top three finish.

Simpson University (930) couldn't keep their day one momentum trending in an upward direction through the final two days, falling from first to fifth over the three-day event. Meanwhile, the Warriors' reserve team was able to gain some traction and end the week on a high note, besting the Raiders' reserves by a single stroke for sixth place.

Despite his struggles today, Bragg was able to fend off two comeback performances from individuals on SOU and TLU's programs to clinch the individual crown, as his first and second round pars proved to be the difference maker overall. The Raiders' Ricky Reisner (+9) shot one under par today in his attempt to catch Bragg at the top, but instead found himself in a two-way tie for second with the Bulldogs' Tobey Wills.

Corban's Shane Jacobus (+10) was one of the most consistent golfers in the top five this weekend, shooting back-to-back-back rounds of 74, 76, and 73 to earn a fourth-place finish. Three individuals would go on to tie for the fifth-place spot at 227 (+14) for the week, which includes the Yotes' Parker Edwards and the Raiders' Mason Lebow and Matt Forsyth. The Red Hawks' top performers were Felipe Ferriera and Dean Knight, who finished at +18 and +20 in tenth and tied for eleventh overall, respectively.

The Warriors' final tournament of the fall season will take place in roughly three weeks from today, as they'll trade the damp Oregon coast for some dry Arizona heat, with the Firestorm Fall Classic set to begin on November 6th and run through the following day.
