Twait, Rubio Take Home Weight Class Crowns at 2023 Mike Clock Open

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Another pair of tournament weight class championships awaited the RV Corban University Men's Wrestling team Sunday evening, as the 2023 Mike Clock Open, hosted by NCAA DIII Pacific University, concluded with two Warriors being named individual class champions, and for the second-consecutive week for each of them as well.

"We wrestled well today and were able to close out close matches in the third period, so I'm happy with our conditioning and overall approach to competition," Warriors' head coach Nolan Harris shared regarding the team's performance as a whole.

"It was good to see Lance perform well and avenge a loss from last weekend on his way to a runner-up finish. Our guys are opening up and looking to score even more points. David led the way by outscoring his opponents 75-15 and claim his second tournament title this season. His pace and constant pressure are really setting the tone for the team. Isaiah is settling into college wrestling and won his second tournament of the season tonight, scoring bonus point wins in each of his 5 matches. And there were some unattached wrestlers that got after it as well. I'm happy with the progress of all the guys thus far and am looking forward to continuing to improve," Harris concluded.

Redshirt junior David Rubio took home the 157-weight class championship on the cusp of some incredibly dominant wrestling, as he pinned his Eastern Oregon University opponent in the opening round before earning three technical falls in his next four matchups, with the other resulting in a major decision. Rubio remains perfect on the season with multiple pins, tech falls, and major decisions as he looks to build upon his national runner-up position from 2022-23.

Meanwhile, true freshman Isaiah Twait has continued his introduction into the collegiate wrestling scene with complete control in his bouts, as he went 5-0 this Sunday with a pair of technical falls, major decisions, and a pin in the 184 quarterfinals over Southwestern Oregon Community College's (SWOCC) Micaiah Montalbin to claim his second collegiate crown in as many tournaments.

Seven more Warriors earned podium placements in Forest Grove today, including a runner-up position for sophomore Lance Stover in the 133-weight class. Third place finishers include sophomore Brayden Boyd and Bo Davis, junior Tyson Stover and sophomore Luke Jensen each placed fourth, while freshmen Andres Nicacio and Jesse Rubio each claimed sixth place finishes for the Navy and Gold.

Corban men's wrestling will travel down to the south coast this upcoming Friday for a head-to-head dual scrimmage with SWOCC at 6pm in Coos Bay, Oregon.
