CORVALLIS, Ore. – The following four CCC student-athletes have been recognized as the Rize Laboratory Players of the Week for their performances during competition from Nov. 27 – Dec. 3, 2023.
Men’s Basketball – Player
Southern Oregon University’s Khalil Chatman was named the Rize Laboratory Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Chatman, a junior forward from Portland, Ore., started the CCC season by driving Southern Oregon to two huge wins. In the 81-75 upset over No. 2-ranked College of Idaho, he recorded career-highs of 19 points (on 8-of-11 shooting) and 10 rebounds to lead SOU. The next day against competitive Eastern Oregon University, he tallied seven points and grabbed three rebounds on top of scoring the go-ahead basket with 28 seconds left to secure the Raiders 61-57 victory. On the week, Chatman made two steals and half of his free throws (4-of-8) while shooting 52.4 percent in 62 minutes played.
Women’s Basketball – Player
Oregon Tech’s Gabbie Gascon was named the Rize Laboratory Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Gascon, a sophomore guard from Jackson, Calif., led Oregon Tech in both CCC opening games as they remain the lone undefeated team in the conference. In OIT’s first win over No. 18-ranked EOU (68-67) since 2019, she drained a career high 16 baskets. The next day, while guiding the Owls to its seventh straight victory she scored 14 points in the first half against C of I (101-66). On the week, Gascon recorded a 50-percent overall clip while making 6-of-7 free throws and added four rebounds, three assists and two steals in each win in 63 total minutes played.
Men's Wrestling – Wrestler
No. 11-ranked University of Providence’s Aden Graves was named the Rize Laboratory Men's Wrestler of the Week.
Graves, a 157lbs sophomore from Sidney, Mont., is ranked 14th individually and had an outstanding week with two wins in the Argo’s Friday Battle of the Rockies duals. In his first match up of the day, he helped lead UP to a team victory over Snow College with a pin in 2:27. Next up, he upset last year's National Champion and No. 1 Salvador Silva of No. 3-ranked Southeastern University in a 2-1 decision.
Women's Wrestling – Wrestler
No. 6-ranked University of Providence’s Paige Morales was named the Rize Laboratory Women's Wrestler of the Week.
Morales, a freshman from Fresno, Calif., is ranked 7th individually at 109lbs and went 4-0 at the Battle of the Rockies over the weekend. She took first place on Friday by upsetting No. 2 Kayla Mckinley-Johnson of No. 2-ranked Menlo College, 10-0 in the championship match. She got there by a TF (11-0) and a Forfeit in the quarter and semifinals. On Saturday, Morales defeated Mckinley-Johnson again in the Argos 31-11 dual victory over Menlo.
