MEN'S DAY 1 RESULTS | WOMEN'S DAY 1 RESULTS
LEWISTON, Idaho – Lewis-Clark State women's golfer Alexandra Schmidt has a five-shot lead while teammates Bryden Brown and Jorgen Lie Viken share the men's lead after a rainy first day of the LCSC Warrior Spring Invitational at the Lewiston Golf and Country Club on Monday.
"Today was that annoying rain and some chilly temperatures," coach Zach Anderson said. "We were able to play some solid golf."
The Warriors have double-digit leads in both men's and women's competition.
The LC State men, who moved up to No. 16 on the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll on Friday, have a 19-shot advantage over second place North Idaho College after the first two rounds.
Viken hit four birdies, including three in five holes, to take a one-shot advantage after the opening round. Freshman Brown charged out in front but a bogey on his final hole of the day and a birdie by Viken set up a tie with 18 holes to go.
"Really proud of Jorgen and his consistency, and Bryden for stepping up in a big way this semester," Anderson said.
Devon Caruso shot an even-par 72 in both rounds and is currently tied for the fifth spot.
The LC State women's team, who received votes in the newest poll, finished 42 strokes ahead of second-place NIC.
"The women had one of their top rounds this year with a 306," Anderson said. "Proud of the work Alex has been putting in. Deana (Caruso) and Dallis (Shockey) put together some solid rounds as well."
Schmidt shot a 1-under 71 to take a five-shot lead over teammate Deana Caruso into the final round. Freshman Dallis Shockey shot a 5-over 77 to finish one shot behind Deana Caruso and sits in third.
Reece Garey was not part of the team scoring but finished the opening round with a first round 8-over 80 to give the Warriors the top four individual spots.
Kylee Hughes shot an 82 to finish the first day in sixth while Kyla Currie is tied for eighth position after a round of 85.
"Hope to continue the good golf into tomorrow," Anderson added. "Still work to do tomorrow."
