OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Evergreen Men's Soccer Team opened their season hosting Trinity Valley University for a match that had much more action than the final score suggested. The Spartan netted the lone goal of the match to hand the Geoducks a 1-0 loss.
For their season-opener, Evergreen (0-1) went with the starting lineup of Emmanuel Nicasio, Raymundo Curiel, Alec Zimmerman, Jesus Flores, Andreas Malunat, Brandon Clough, Isaiah Luna, Alan Barragan, Joshua Coetzee, Dakota Seddon and Brendan Gribek in goal.
Despite the goal allowed, Gribek had a solid showing in goal with seven saves in the contest.
Malunat (4), Flores (2) and Nicasio (1) were responsible for all seven of the Geoducks total shots with one shot on goal each from the latter two.
The two teams spend much of the match feeling each other out and relying on their defenses to shut down quality scoring opportunities. The lone goal came in the 18
th minute when Trinity Western (1-0) made a cross into high traffic and a Spartan managed to control it, spin around and fire off a shot that snuck past Evergreen's keeper.
The Geoducks had their chances to respond, including a late breakaway and potential scoring opportunity for Malunat in the 74
th minute of play that was broken up by a collision just outside the box and resulted in a yellow card on Trinity Western's goalkeeper.
Evergreen will be on the road for their next match against Pacific University on Aug. 27
