Warriors Exceed Expectations in Season Opener at Linfield Harrier Classic

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Corban University Cross Country teams are off and running for the 2023 season, and head coach Todd Bos is thrilled with the efforts put forth by his student-athletes on the course this morning at the Linfield Harrier Classic. The men's team finished third place overall in a competition littered with NCAA opponents, the highest finish of any NAIA program, while the women's roster did not qualify for a team finish due to minor preseason injuries hindering a complete team of five to cross the finish line.

"We were only able to run three runners today on the women's side due to a few of our runners nursing some minor injuries," Coach Bos stated. "However, the runners that did run ran well in their first race of the season. It was a good start to the year and portends to promising results in the future."

Both the men's and women's races were dominated by NCAA DI University of Oregon, as the Ducks took the top overall individual finishers and both team first-place trophies to take their first races of the early season.

Junior Judah Koehler led the Warrior field with a 64th place overall finish in the women's 4k, pacing herself at an even 16:16.0 to set her season standard. The lone Navy and Gold finishers behind Koehler were sophomores Anne Morud and Abigail Scott, who ran a joint race and finished within a millisecond of each other at 17:26.7 and 17:26.8, respectively.

Moving on with the men's third place finish, Coach Bos shared, "The men had a good race and I believe they put forth a hard effort. They ran controlled and moved up throughout as the race progressed. We will continue to pray for good health for both teams as we work diligently in practice."

Graduate student Robert Swoboda made a booming reappearance on the collegiate long distance stage by finishing eighth overall in McMinnville this morning, with only a handful of DI student-athletes finishing above the Ukiah, California native who logged an 18:29.0 in his first race back since the fall of 2021. Sophomore Zander Moha and freshman Jack Gladfelter closed off the Top 25 for the Warriors, placing 22nd and 25th overall, in that order.

Coach Bos sent nine total men's runners on behalf of Corban, as the top five Warrior finishers were rounded out by junior Forrest Cooley and freshman Braydon Lee in 41st and 42nd place. The final four Warriors to cross the finish line were sophomores Nathan Pfaff (21:45.7) and Grant Anderson (22:07.5), followed closely by freshmen Noah Platz (22:33.7) and Jamin Potloff (24:04.1) who each performed well in their first collegiate races.
