INDEPENDENCE, Ore. – It only took two races for the legend of the Corban University Cross Country programs to find his way back to the top of the podium, as graduate student Robert Swoboda took home the first-place finish in the Oak Knoll Loop Run earlier this morning.
"The men ran a controlled race and executed Coach Eagon's race plan well today," head coach Todd Bos shared on the men's team overall finish today. "We will continue to work hard and focus our training to the end of the season races. We are thankful to God for the great results today."
The men's program finished in second place as a team over in Independence today among a field of NCAA opponents, with three Warriors placing in the top eleven placers. The women's squad had only three runners compete this morning due to the team harboring injuries, thus not qualifying for a team result.
"Again, our women's team was hampered by illness and injury today as we head into our second race of the season, but that didn't stop our healthy ladies from stepping up and running great races," Coach Bos shared on the women's side. "Both Judah, Abby, and Anne ran excellent races and their 6k times show that they are on track for PR races at Bush Park in two weeks. I am very proud of the women's program, and I am looking forward to when we have everyone back and racing together."
Swoboda's time of 25:01.7 was the best of the field by nearly seven entire seconds, earning his first individual title of the 2023 season. Freshman Jack Gladfelter joined Swoboda in the top ten with a final time of 25:35.6, finishing ninth overall amid a group of University of Portland runners.
Sophomore Zander Moha was right behind Gladfelter in eleventh overall with a 25:39.4 finish, with freshman Brayden Lee and junior Forrest Cooley closing out the top twenty-five Warrior finishes in 21st and 23rd, respectively. The final three student-athletes in the navy and gold clad uniforms to cross the finish line were sophomore Nathan Pfaff (47th) and freshmen Noah Platz (62nd) and Jamin Potloff (64th).
Regarding the women's race, junior Judah Koehler led the Corban ranks once again, placing 32nd overall to finish right in the middle of the 64-woman field. Freshman Abigail Scott completed the first race of her collegiate career with a 26:07.7 final time in the women's 6K, while redshirt sophomore Anne Morud concluded the Warriors' field with a 26:42.9 mark.
Coach Bos' crews are back in action in two weeks when they'll race locally in the 48th annual Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational at Bush Park in the middle of Salem's city limits.
