CORVALLIS, Ore. – After an undefeated opening to the 2023 CCC season, the College of Idaho Men’s Soccer team was named the Under Armour Team of the Week for Sept. 11 – 17, the Cascade Collegiate Conference announced Sunday.
College of Idaho (3-1-1, 2-0 CCC) began its preseason with two losses but quickly turned things around since. This weekend they recorded two shutouts in the opening of the 2023 CCC Soccer season with a total of six goals on the road in Washington.
The first victory was over The Evergreen State College on Friday with a final score of 2-0. The scoring for the Yotes got started later in the first half with the help of a Geoduck foul inside the penalty area, leading to Emil Powles delivering the first goal of the game on a penalty kick. Pol Romero found the ball and scored his first goal for the College of Idaho in the 86th minute to secure the advantage. Tom Baynard-Smith recorded a clean sheet in his season debut, recording four saves in the C of I win.
The next win was a 4-0 score against Northwest University. Jorge Fernandez scored the opening goal of the game to lead the Yotes. Joao Bastos assisted in the first goal and then scored one of his own just a few minutes later. Grant Embree and Eric Hornung sent the ball to the back of the net for the final two goals of the game. Baynard-Smith recorded another five saves for his second shutout of the weekend.
Up next, College of Idaho will return home next week, playing in their home opener Friday against Walla Walla University.
