Freshman Jaylo Bello ties Walla Walla school-record in 82-54 victory over Northwest Indian College

WALLA WALLA, Wash. --- Freshman Jaylo Bello tied a school record with seven 3-pointers and had a career-high 28 points to lead the Wolves to an 82-54 nonconference victory over Northwest Indian College at Windemuth Court on Saturday.

Bello was 7-of-9 from beyond the arc and hit all six attempts in the first half. The Tonasket, Wash., native's point total was the most by any Walla Walla women's basketball player this season.

Senior Chariah Daniels was two assists from a triple-double with 12 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists. Daniels was 6-of-12 from the floor and added two steals.

It was a strong performance by the Wolves from the 3-point line as the team hit 16-of-28 (57.1%). Walla Walla (3-3) was strong defensively in the first half as the home team was able to hold NWIC to 22 first half points and 42% shooting in the game.

"Proud of our team's energy and effort," Walla Walla coach Tony Nakashima said. "Everyone contributed and played as a team with great ball movement and playing together."

HOW IT HAPPENED

Bello got the scoring off quickly with her first 3-pointer of the night to give Walla Walla an early lead. Natalee Trevino, Jordan Green-Wallace and Allison Haslam followed suit as the Wolves scored their first 12 points from beyond the arc and had a 12-7 lead halfway through the first quarter.

After a 3 by Sara Wolgemuth of the Eagles, Green-Wallace hit a pair of free throws and sparked a 7-0 Wolves run and the first quarter ended 30-14.

The defense continued to shut down Northwest Indian College in the second quarter as the Eagles were only able to connect on a quarter of their shots. Trevino hit a layup and Walla Walla led by 21 late in the first half. Delaney Gunther hit from beyond the arc and Bello made her sixth 3 of the first half to bookend the first 20 minutes with baskets. Walla Walla had a 27-point advantage at the break.

Walla Walla took its largest lead (37 points) after a pair of Haslam free throws with 5:59 remaining in the third quarter. NWIC did not go away quietly and outscored the Wolves 13-2 for the remainder of the third.

Bello tied the school record with 4:52 to go in the game with her seventh 3-pointer off an assist by Daniels. It was also the eighth and final assist for the senior.
