SALEM, Ore. – The No. 14-ranked Corban University Men's Wrestling team put on a show tonight in the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center, as the Warriors crushed Southwestern Oregon Community College in their 2024-25 home opener by registering two pins and four technical falls against the Lakers.
The only forfeits of the night would come in the 133 and 197-weight classes, as the Warriors declined to submit a wrestler against SWOCC's Jayce Miller while the Lakers allowed a six-point forfeit to Corban graduate student Hunter James for an even 6-6 split for each program.
"It was good to get in front of our home crowd and a good way to kick off the season's home dual schedule," shared Warriors' head coach Nolan Harris. "I thought we wrestled well overall and we put a lot of match points on the board. We looked good on our feet and wrestled well on top. Brayden did a great job of getting us started with a fall and Asaiah closed us right with a fall as well. We want to entertain our fans and people love seeing points scored. We were able to deliver on that tonight and look forward to being back at C.E. Jeffers on December 7th against Cal Poly Humboldt."
At 125 pounds, junior Brayden Boyd made quick work of his Laker opponent Omar Barrera, pinning him in just over a minute for a quick six on the scoreboard for the Warriors. Following the 133-pound forfeit in favor of SWOCC, junior Luke Jensen nearly replicated on numerous occasions but settled for an 18-0 technical fall over Ryo Horikawa, with sophomore Jr Downing earning a technical fall of Lakers' Wyatt Smith at 16-1 and pushing the team score to 16-6, Corban.
After a quick escape and takedown by SWOCC's Hakuilua Paaluhi at 157 pounds, No. 1-ranked David Rubio flipped the script and turned a 4-3 deficit into a fall of Paaluhi in 4:55, keeping him perfect on the season and registering his first pin of the year.
With SWOCC's Karsten Jensen earning a decision 14-7 in the 165-pound weight class against Corban sophomore Gus Menne, senior Tyson Stover avenged his teammate's loss with a full-time technical fall including riding time of Lakers' Mario Deanda-Lopez, as he secured multiple three-point takedowns for the 20-5 victory and pushed the Warriors' team lead to 27-9.
The team points continued to add up for the Warriors, as sophomore Isaiah Twait earned a first round technical fall of SWOCC 184-pounder Will Abrams at 22-5 and James received his 197-pound forfeit for a 38-9 team lead and setting the Navy and Gold up for a near clean sweep of the Lakers entering the 285 weight class. Moving up from 197 to 285 for this dual, junior Asaiah Kamplain brushed aside the weight deficit and flipped Lakers' Logan Clayburn on multiple occasions, eventually earning the pin in 1:55 to cap off a dominant night for the Navy and Gold.
