CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 8-ranked Southern Oregon University men’s wrestling team was named the Under Armour Team of the Week for December 16 – 22, the Cascade Collegiate Conference announced Sunday.
This week, SOU defeated No. 15-ranked Montana State University-Northern and finished in 4th place at the Reno Tournament of Champions.
On Thursday, the Raiders won the dual, 32-16 to record its largest defeat over the Lights in 13 years. Three consecutive pins followed by back-to-back major decisions started the night to put Southern Oregon up 26-0 through the first five matches. The winners included; Vonn Fenn (125), Dylan Clark (133), Simon Graber (141), Travis Thorpe (149), Aaron Gandara (157), and Braylin Ruchti (184).
After an eight-year drought without a placer at the Reno Tournament of Champions, the Southern Oregon men's wrestling team had four wrestlers earn placements and secured a program-best fourth-place finish in the team standings at Sunday's annual event. Aaron Gandara was the runner-up at 157 pounds, Vonn Fenn (125) and Adrian Chavez-Morales (184) placed fourth in their brackets, and Asher Ruchti (197) took sixth as the Raiders accumulated 61 ½ team points. The Raiders also got three wins out of Carson Gooley (197), two from Timothy Lopez (133) and Travis Thorpe (149), and one apiece from Dylan Mann (157), Dylan Straley (157), Elias Corona (197) and Shaiden Carr (165).
Up next, Southern Oregon will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Jan. 10-11 to put their 12-0 record on the line at the NWCA National Duals.
