Beacons Split with Pios for First Win

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – A little home cookin’ was just what the Beacons needed on Saturday as they split a double-header with Lewis & Clark College and picked up their first victory of the young season in their 2024 Rich Schwab Field debut.

GAME ONE: Lewis & Clark 8, Bushnell 0 (6 Innings)

The Beacons were out-hit 12-2 in the opening contest and weren’t able to get anything going against a pair of Pioneer pitchers who each went three innings.

LC Scored three in the first, added two in the second and closed out out with two in the fifth and one in the sixth to secure the run-rule victory.

Hannah Tennant and Madison Steelman each got hits for the Beacons with the former hitting a double in the sixth.

GAME TWO: Bushnell 6, Lewis & Clark 3

The Beacons claimed their first win of the season in the night cap, behind the strength of a five-run fourth inning to blow the game open.

Before that, however, senior catcher Faith Wayman had given the Beacons a 1-0 lead in the second inning when she crushed her second home run of the season to deep left-center field. The fourth inning onslaught amounted to five runs coming in on six hits with two different Pioneer pitching changes mixed in.

After a Wayman double led off the inning, Haleigh Wambolt (pictured) brought home the pinch-running Montanah Love to make it 2-0 and force the first call to the Lewis & Clark bullpen. After a ground out, Steelman slapped a hard liner to third base that ricocheted off the third-baseman and brought home Wambolt.

Later, Alyssa Ferreira hit an RBI groundout, Gracelyn Johnson followed with an RBI single and Suzi Krstic doubled down the left field line to score Johnson and give the Beacons a 6-0 lead.

The Pioneers were able to get three runs back in the top of the sixth, but starting pitcher Liz Hillier (1-2) was able to stem the tide and finish off the complete game victory. The senior ended up with five strikeouts in seven innings, giving up six hits but just one that went for extra bases.

Wambolt and Wayman each finished game two batting 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI and all six of Bushnell’s runs batted in were spread to six different players.

Bushnell remains home for their next double-header, facing off against Willamette University on Saturday at 12:00 pm.
