CORVALLIS, Ore. – After another dominant appearance at the Grand View Open, the No 1. team in the NAIA, Menlo College Women’s Wrestling, was named the Under Armour Team of the Week for Jan. 29 – Feb. 4, the Cascade Collegiate Conference announced Sunday.
On Saturday at the Grand View Open, Menlo put on a tremendous performance at one of the most competitive tournaments of the year by placing multiple athletes on podiums. Of the 13 Oaks that took the mat, 10 placed overall with three reaching Individual Champion status.
No. 8-ranked Kayla McKinley-Johnson (101) earned a well-deserved champion title. She defeated three ranked opponents, two being upset victories, including two technical falls and a pin for a total weekend score of 36-7. No. 4-ranked Kalila Shrive (170) was also a driving force for the Oaks. She completed a pin, two technical falls, and earned a 7-3 decision victory to claim her title. No. 1-ranked Tavia Heidelberg-Tillotson (191) was the final Oak to be named an Individual Champion by completing a phenomenal 5-0 day. She recorded a technical fall, a pin, a 10-4, and a 4-1 decision before finally receiving an injury forfeit in the second period of the championship match.
No. 3 Louisa Schwab (130), No. 5 Desiree Jones (143), and No. 3 Shannon Workinger (155) all earned second place honors for the Oaks. No. 5 Alana Vivas (123) and Alexandra Lopez (143) claimed third place standings. Alejandra Corral (116) ended in 4th place and Cindy Zepeda (130) at 5th to round out the top Oak finishers.
Next weekend, the Menlo College Women's Wrestling is on the road again for the Cerritos College Duals and Open. This is the team’s final outing before they host the CCC Tournament on February 25th.
