Godinez Finishes in Second Place at Mike Clock Open

FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- Horacio Godinez (So.) of The Evergreen State College earned second place in the 141-pound weight class at the Mike Clock Open on Sunday, Nov. 9. The tournament was hosted by Pacific University at the Stoller Center. A total of seven athletes competed for the Geoducks.

Godinez lost in the championship match 7-6 to Darrel Nanpuya from Cal Poly Humbold. Prior to the title match, Godinez won five matches with one regular decision, one technical fall, and three falls.

In the preliminary round, Godinez defeated Tyler Rhue from Southern Oregon University 4-0. Godinez pinned Markus Lee of Simon Fraser University at 5:35 during the first round of the championship bracket. In the second round of the championship bracket, Godinez won with a fall against unattached wrestler Tavarree Lee 1:47 into the match.

During the quarterfinals, he downed Sully Hill of Corban University on a fall at 1:42. In the semifinals, Godinez outscored Blake Runion of Corban 17-1 to win by technical fall. Runion entered the match ranked #23 in the NAIA Men's Rankings for the 141-pound weight class.

Hassan Abdi (Jr.) and Jayms Vilona (Fr.) each achieved 2-2 records at the tournament. Abdi and Vilona both competed in the 157-pound weight class.

Abdi won his opening match against Nico Yazzolino of Clackamas Community College 9-5. In the second round, he was defeated by Joe Anthony Perez from Cal Poly Humboldt 16-1 on a technical fall. Abdi rebounded with an 11-6 win in the consolation second round against Parker Fabrycki from Clackamas CC. In the consolation third round. Kellen Kolka from Umpqua Community College won against Abdi with a 10-2 major decision.

Vilona was defeated in the first round by Beau Priest from Oregon State University on a fall at 0:55. During the first round of consolation action, Vilona earned a 19-3 technical fall against Caige Coleman from Big Bend Community College). He added a win in the consolation second round by pinning Marcela Curtis of Pacific at the 3:00 mark. In the consolation third round, Vilona lost to Ethan Owens from Eastern Oregon University on a fall at 3:00.

"I'm extremely pleased from the team's performance today," Evergreen Head Men's Wrestling Coach Emanuel Scott said. " Everyone is starting to put things together and they are steadily improving every week."

The Geoducks will return to the mat on Sunday, Nov. 23 at the Spokane Open. The tournament will be held at The Podium in Spokane, Washington, starting at 9 a.m. PST.
