Godinez Wins 141-pound Weight Class at Spokane Open

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Horacio Godinez (So.) from The Evergreen State College took first place in the 141-pound weight class at the Spokane Open on Sunday, Nov. 23. Savion Galloway (So.) added a sixth place finish for the Geoducks in the 285-pound weight class. The tournament was held at The Podium.

Also for Evergreen, two wrestlers earned at least three victories in their respective weight classes. Hassan Abdi (Jr.) was 4-2 in the 157-pound weight class. Jayms Vilona (Fr.) went 3-2 in the 149-pound weight class. A total of seven Geoducks competed at the tournament.

Godinez, ranked #24 in the NAIA at 141 pounds, defeated Blake Runion of Corban University, ranked #23, by a 12-5 score in the championship match. Earlier this season, Godinez downed Runion by a 17-1 technical fall in the semifinals of the Mike Clock Open, where Godinez finished in second place.

As the tournament opened, Godinez earned a fall against Micah Calapiz from Simon Fraser University (Canada) at the 4:28 mark. In the second round, Godinez added a 17-0 technical fall to move past Matix Cooklin of Eastern Oregon University. Godinez won in the third round with a fall at 1:18 against unattached competitor Duane Zamora. An injury default by unattached wrestler Daeton Johnson advanced Godinez into the semifinals.

During his semifinal match, Godinez registered a fall versus Caleb Morales of Montana State University-Northern at 2:09. Godinez claimed the championship by defeating Runion. Godinez was 5-0 overall, plus one win by injury default.

Galloway started his efforts in the 285-pound weight class with a loss by fall to Shane Mattson from Montana State-Northern at 2:56 near the end of the first period. Galloway responded with four consecutive wins. In the first round of consolation play, he pinned Magnus Schwabenbauer of Central Washington University in 15 seconds. In the second consolation round, Galloway pinned AJ Harris from MSU-Northern at 2:10.

The string of victories for Galloway by pinning his opponents continued in the third and fourth rounds of the consolation bracket. In the third round, he registered a fall against Braxton Cottam of Pacific University (Ore.) at 3:30. Galloway added a fall at the 0:58 mark versus Matthew Speelman, who competed unattached.

Galloway's run of wins ended when Hayden Martin of Eastern Oregon defeated him by forfeit in the consolation semifinals. Galloway lost by no contest to Mattson of MSU-Northern in the fifth place match.

Abdi began action in the 157-pound weight class with a technical fall and a 19-3 score versus Milo Jones-Longstreet of Washington State University. Abdi lost to Zakin Bolander of Treasure Valley Community College in the second round by a 13-10 sudden victory decision after their match went into overtime.

In the second round of the consolation bracket, Abdi rebounded with a fall at 1:45 against Triston Donald of Washington State. Abdi tacked on another pin during the third round of consolation play, as he ended his match with Jacob Quintua of Simon Fraser at the 3:30 mark. In the fourth consolation round, Abdi earned a 22-5 technical fall against Damon Gasilos of Linfield University. Gus Menne of Corban defeated Abdi in the fifth round of consolation with a 17-2 technical fall.

Vilona received a bye in the first round at 149 pounds. He won his match in the second round with a fall versus unattached competitor Coen Roberts at 6:51. Austin Ramirez from the University of Providence downed Vilona with a 12-4 major decision in the third round. 

As Vilona moved into the fourth round of the consolation bracket, he recorded a 17-5 major decision over Logan Bradley of Beig Bend Community College. In the fifth consolation round, Vilona outscored Adrian Finsrud of Western Washington University 16-13. Connor Crum, wrestling unattached, won against Vilona in the sixth consolation round with a 20-7 major decision.

Evergreen will compete on Sunday, Dec. 7 at the Clackamas Open. Action at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Oregon, is set to begin at 9 a.m. PST.
