Desert Heat Claims Day One, Warriors Struggle in Firestorm Fall Classic Opening Round

BUCKEYE, Ariz. – In their final fall tournament first round of the 2025-26 season, the Corban University Men's Golf team was unable to keep themselves out of the rough and struggled to locate greens in some of the best weather they've seen all fall down in central Arizona, as the desert heat got the best of the Warriors and will require them to play their best golf moving forward if they want to move back up the team standings in the largest tourney of the fall slate.

"Was a long day in the desert for us," began Warriors' head coach Charlie Marshall. "We just couldn't stay out of it all day. Brayden played a great round and could have been much higher but ended up doubling the last hole. Isaac continues to play well as a true rookie and knows he left some strokes out there as well. The greens were very slow due to overseeing and we punished ourselves for it. Hoping to rebound with some better play tomorrow and jump back into the middle of the field before the final round."

The 16-team tourney was led by No. 20-ranked Texas Wesleyan University (278) and their -10 team stroke differential, providing them a six-stroke lead over No. 16-ranked Ottawa University-Arizona (284). Fellow Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) member RV Oregon Tech (285) is in third, followed by No. 15-ranked Rocky Mountain College (291) and RV St. Thomas University (292) to round out the top five programs following day one scores. Rams' Brady Meek (65) is the round one leader after going seven under par to start this week's tournament, with OIT's Cayson VanBeekum (66) hot on his tail.

A single stroke lies between the Warriors (317) and Dakota Wesleyan University (316) on the team scoreboard, with the tourney host Firestorm (306) next up in 14th. With some good play tomorrow, the Warriors should be able to slowly work their way back into contention. Senior Brayden Sparkman (76) completed the low round of the day at just four strokes over par to sit in 45th of the 80+ man tourney, while senior Shane Jacobus (78) and true freshman Isaac Laro (78) were right behind Sparkman in a tie for 58th. Junior David Harvey (85) is in 77th, while junior Owen Heath (86) completed day one in 78th.

Day two of the Firestorm Fall Classic will begin tomorrow morning, with both the men's and women's tourneys playing a single round before round three on Wednesday.
