OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Bayleigh Harder (Sr., F/C) scored 15 points, and Jenna Glenzel (Sr., G) registered 14 points and seven steals for The Evergreen State College, but University of Puget Sound defeated the Geoducks 88-49 in a non-conference women's basketball game on Wednesday, Dec. 10. For Glenzel, the seven steals tied a career high and also tied for fifth all-time in a single game for the Geoducks.
Glenzel previously earned seven steals against Bushnell University on Jan. 5, 2024. Also recording seven steals for Evergreen was LaTrina Woods versus Oregon Tech on Jan. 9, 2010. The Evergreen single game record was set by Trinity Betoney with 11 steals against Puget Sound on Dec. 11, 2019.
Puget Sound, which led by just four points at the end of the first quarter, improved to 5-2 on the season. The Loggers compete in NCAA Division III and the Northwest Conference. Evergreen dropped to 0-4 overall. The Geoducks are members of the NAIA and the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
In addition to scoring 15 points, Harder added three rebounds and blocked three shots. Glenzel's 14 points included an 8-for-8 performance at the free throw line. Glenzel grabbed three rebounds and provided two assists.
Amaya Afatasi (Jr., PG) contributed six points for the Geoducks. Jesselle Victo Castillo (Jr., PG) also scored six points.
Mele Sake topped Puget Sound with 23 points as she hit 9 of 12 field goals and made 5 of 6 free throws. Sake also hauled down six rebounds. Cayton Smith tacked on 13 points and six rebounds, while Hailey Quiggle registered 12 points and supplied four assists. Grace Lee added 10 points to go along with seven rebounds and six steals.
Led by Glenzel of Evergreen and Lee of Puget Sound, both teams piled up steals on defense. The Loggers finished with 13 steals, while Evergreen achieved 12 steals.
The teams were tied 7-7 after Glenzel sank two free throws with 5:06 remaining in the first quarter. Puget Sound led 15-9 following a 3-pointer by Quiggle with 2:32 left, but Evergreen scored six of the final 10 points in the quarter to cut the margin to 19-15.
Afatasi tallied a layup for the Geoducks early in the second quarter to pull Evergreen within two points at 19-17. Puget Sound added the next eight points, ending with a 3-pointer by Smith, to increase the lead to 27-17. Evergreen moved within 29-23 on two free throws by Glenzel at the 5:22 mark. The Loggers ended the half with a 15-0 run to grab a 44-23 lead.
Puget Sound gained a 22-11 scoring advantage in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Loggers outscored the Geoducks 22-15.
Glenzel's seven steals included four steals in the second quarter, plus one steal in the third period, and two steals in the fourth quarter. Glenzel has earned a team-high 15 steals in Evergreen's four games this season.
The Geoducks will play a non-conference game at Pacific Lutheran University on Sunday, Dec. 14. Game time in Tacoma, Washington, is set for 2 p.m. PST.
