Navarro earns medalist honors as LCSC, UBC tie for 1st at Spring Classic

EAGLE POINT, Ore. – Lewis-Clark State’s Alex Navarro earned Cascade Collegiate Conference medalist honors for the first time, but British Columbia stopped the Warriors from making it a clean sweep as the SOU Spring Classic concluded Tuesday at Stone Ridge Golf Club.

In the third of four CCC-counting tournaments, the No. 6-ranked Thunderbirds – who won the first two titles by a combined 85 strokes – had to make up five strokes on the Warriors in the third round to tie the teams at 10-under for the co-title. The teams opted to go to a playoff with all five representatives from both squads competing on the 18th hole, where UBC went 2-under and LCSC went 2-over.

The individual title similarly went down to the wire. Navarro finished 7-under and second-place Dylan MacDonald of UBC at 5-under, but the players were tied entering the 17th hole before Navarro birdied and MacDonald took a two-stroke penalty for losing his ball.

UBC also produced the third-place finisher, Jake Houston (-4), though he competed as an individual, and the fourth- and seventh-place finishers in Aidan Schumer (-2) and Mackenzie Bickell (E).

Sondre Andresen (-1) took sixth for LCSC and had the second-lowest round of the third with a 69 on the par-72 course. Only College of Idaho’s Parker Edwards (67) did better on the day.

Southern Oregon landed at third in the team standings, going 2-under collectively, and boasted three top-10 individuals for the first time ever in a CCC competition: Ty Beyer (-2, t-4th), Mason Labow (E, t-7th) and Ricky Reisner (+1, 10th).

The CCC Championship is set for April 21-23 in Portland. MacDonald will enter the tournament with the circuit’s lowest scoring average.
