EUGENE, Ore. – The Bushnell men’s soccer team held Simpson University to just two shots on goal in their home opener at Civic Park on Thursday, taking a 1-0 victory.
The Beacons dominated the first half, out-shooting the Red Hawks 4-0, but it wasn’t until the opening minutes of the second half that they were able to find pay dirt.
Bushnell’s all-time leading assist man, Omar Barajas, has been getting the job done himself plenty in the young season. The junior Forward created his own shot just inside the box, firing home his third goal of the season in the 49th minute.
“I think we came out strong in the second half which led to some early touches in the final third for the goal,” said Barajas. “It was a great team effort today and I am proud of the way we fought. Hopefully we can keep this momentum going.”
Simpson responded well after the goal, out-shooting the Beacons 6-3 down the stretch without allowing another shot-on-goal to Bushnell in the half.
"It was a very difficult game today,” said head coach Joao Ehlers. “There were moments that we struggled technically, but our boys raised the level with their effort and attitude throughout the match. We are very pleased with the result.”
Unfortunately for the visitors, the Beacon defense was up to the task with senior goalkeeper William Haberfield collecting two saves as he recorded his first shutout with the Beacons.
UP NEXT: Bushnell (2-0) will take their 14-game non-conference unbeaten streak on the road, traveling to face Lewis & Clark College on Sunday, kicking off at 2:45 pm.
