Eagles Overwhelmed in Second Half Loss

KIRKLAND, WASH. - The Northwest University women’s soccer team returned home for the first time this season with a loss to Central Washington 3-1.

With the season officially underway for the Eagles, they return home after falling to Pacific University to face the Wildcats, who get their first ever game of the new season. However it only counted as a preseason game for the visiting side.

The Eagles and Wildcats had a scrappy joust with a total of 20 fouls throughout the game, but only one yellow card was distributed with Bella Green of the Wildcats getting the call 25 minutes into the game. The first goal would come off the foot of Eagle Kiersten Hendrickson from a penalty shot in the 39th minute. The Eagles continued to press throughout the first half.

As the second half transpired, the Wildcats engaged their attack. Their first goal came from Kelsey Fulton in the 51st minute. Sadie Schaefer scored two goals in the game with the first coming off a penalty shot in the 62nd minute and again six minutes later to extend their lead. While Sara Becerra had good looks to get her team back in the game late, it wasn’t enough as the Eagles fell to 1-2 on the season.

“We came out strong today in the first half which was great to see,” said Head Coach April VanAssche. “CWU was a strong team and took advantage of a couple good opportunities to get the win. Proud of this team and many different aspects of today’s game.”

The Eagles will hit the road once again to LaGrande, Oregon for back-to-back matchups against Doane University on Sunday at 11am and Park University Gilbert on Labor Day also at 11am.
