WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College lost to Whitman College, 5-0, in a non-conference women's soccer game on Saturday, Aug. 30 at the Whitman Athletic Fields. Whitman led 2-0 at halftime before increasing its lead in the second half. The Blues were playing their first game of the regular season, while Evergreen fell to 0-2.
Evergreen competes in the NAIA and the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Whitman is a member of NCAA Division III and the Northwest Conference.
Bailey Bell of Whitman registered three goals for a hat trick. Ella Johnson and Ellie Cortes-Muniz also earned goals for the Blues.
Whitman opened the scoring with Johnson's goal 5:26 into the game. Erisa Baba was credited with an assist on the play. The Blues upped their advantage to 2-0 at 14:55 when a shot by Bailey hit the net with an assist from Kareena Mathew.
The score remained 2-0 at halftime. Evergreen starting goalkeeper Anna Varela (Sr.) achieved six saves in the first 45 minutes. Katie Gresham (Jr.), who played in goal for the Geoducks in the second half, added four saves.
Cortes-Muniz produced Whitman's third goal just 55 seconds after the start of the second half. She was assisted by Johnson. Bell completed her hat trick with goals at 49:47, on an assist from Mathew, and at 54:00, with an assist from Gracia Larson.
For the game, the Blues outshot the Geoducks, 22-8 and held an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. Evergreen created all eight of its shots in the final 30 minutes, including six shots in the final 13 minutes, but the Geoducks were unable to record a goal. Angela Celedon (So., M) and Madeline Dorendorf (Jr., F) each led the Geoducks with two shots. Kaitlyn Hansen (Jr., D) registered Evergreen's shot on goal.
Whitman goalies Seanee Still and Elanor Johnson shared the shutout. Still made no saves in the first half, while Johnson earned one save in the final 45 minutes.
Evergreen will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 6, when the Geoducks will host nearby rival Saint Martin's University. Game time at Geoduck Pitch is set for 2 p.m. PDT.
