Eagles Defense Shines in Shutout

LA GRANDE, ORE. - The Northwest women’s soccer team stood tall in the backfield as they shutout Doane University 2-0 on Sunday morning at Eastern Oregon University.

Both squads had to lick their wounds from their last outings. The Eagles played at home and fell 3-1 to a strong Central Washington team back on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Tigers got blanked by Eastern Oregon 4-0 and looked for an offensive rebound.

The Eagles started the game off with three shots in under seven minutes. It wasn’t until the 38th minute as Ella Baker dazzled the net with a brilliant finish. Six minutes later, Jersey Walker got booked for a yellow card.

Goalkeeper Katie Snow barely had to work as she only had to make one save the entire game. She didn’t face any shots on goal in the entire second half. The Eagles got their second goal from Gracie VanAssche at the 73rd minute and Daniela Mesplie provided the assist. The Eagles go to 2-2 on the year.

“Very proud of our team today,” said Head Coach April VanAssche. “Battling the elements and putting up a couple of goals to get the win! Overall, we played really well as a team and moved the ball around well and defended to keep our shut out today!”

The Eagles will finish up their Labor Day weekend at Eastern Oregon with a matchup against Park University Gilbert Monday at 10:00 AM.
