Eagles Last Minute Goal Enough for Win

REDDING, CALIF. - The Northwest University men’s soccer team grabbed a goal in the dying seconds of the game against Simpson University to win, 1-0.

In their previous game, the Eagles managed a 2-2 draw against Lewis and Clark College to get their record to 1-1-1. The Redhawks however, have gone 0-4 in their season, with their last loss coming against Jessup University 1-0.

Both squads were able to challenge the opposing goalkeepers with good opportunities in the first ten minutes with nothing to show for their efforts. The Eagles throughout the game tallied 16 total shots with five of them being on target, while the Redhawks amassed 11 total shots while also getting five of them on target.

The Redhawks also managed three yellow cards; one in the first half by David Clavijo and two in the second half by Ariel Perez-Aviles, which turned into an ejection in the 84th minute. With the advantage, the Eagles pressed forward and with the help of Tristin Evans and Nick Rivera, Matthew Ludlow bagged the game winner with ten seconds left to go in the game.

“To find the winning goal in the last ten seconds of the game is credit to the guys’ character for never giving up,” said head coach Gary McIntosh. “We did not play particularly well, but we never gave up. There were moments in the game that we made things difficult for ourselves and we must learn to be better in those times. I feel like the guys are playing hard which is important and our play will continue to get better.”

The Eagles will travel to Linfield University tomorrow with the game starting at 2:30 PM.
