CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Walla Walla University Volleyball team was named the Under Armour Team of the Week for September 1 – 7, the Cascade Collegiate Conference announced Sunday.
The Wolves stunned the CCC with back-to-back home upsets to open conference play, sweeping (RV) Oregon Tech on Friday before taking down No. 19-ranked Southern Oregon University on Saturday, marking the program’s first-ever victories over both teams since joining the NAIA in 2009.
In the sweep against OIT (25-10, 25-19, 29-27), WWU hit .278 with 48 kills and 12 service aces, led by Yaimaris Garcia’s all-around performance of 13 kills, 14 assists, five digs, and eight service aces which tied for the second-most in program history. Paula Flores added 12 kills, three blocks, and two service aces. Deshy Sandoval and Vicky Giardina also added 23 assists and 20 digs, respectively.
The momentum carried into Saturday as the Wolves swept Southern Oregon (25-13, 25-16, 25-22). Browning powered the attack with 18 kills while Garcia added 27 assists, eight kills, six digs and two service aces. Flores led the defense with 16 digs while WWU’s front line held the Raiders to a .012 hitting percentage.
The historic weekend pushed the Wolves to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in CCC action.
Next week, Walla Walla will host (RV) Lewis-Clark State College on Tuesday and Warner Pacific University on Friday.
