OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College lost to nearby rival Saint Martin's University 1-0 in a non-conference women's soccer game on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Geoduck Pitch. Brooke Streeter scored the game's only goal in the first half. The Saints evened their season record at 1-1, while Evergreen dropped to 0-3.
Streeter scored on a shot from eight yards out near the right post. She sent the ball into the center of the goal at 31:59. The play began with a cross from the right side that was deflected by an Evergreen defender about 12 yards out near the left post. On the deflection, the ball went to Streeter, who was open and shot past goalkeeper Anna Varela (Sr.).
Each team had a couple of other chances to score. Macey Swensen (So., M) had a shot for Evergreen early in the game at 10:37 that was saved by SMU starting goalie Mallory Patzer. Also for Evergreen, Angela Celedon (So., M) took a free kick that just went over the crossbar at 30:59, one minute before Streeter scored for the Saints.
In the second half, Keilee Silva of St. Martin's hit the crossbar at 74:19. The Saints finished with a 19-5 lead in total shots and a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal. Varela made three saves for Evergreen in the first half, and Katie Gresham (Jr., GK) registered three saves for TESC in the second half. Patzer earned the one save for St. Martin's over the first 45 minutes. Sam Escobar played in goal for the Saints in the second half but did not record a save while splitting the shutout.
St. Martin's claimed a 14-4 margin in corner kicks. The Saints were called for offside a total of five times, while the Geoducks were not called for offside.
Evergreen will take on Pacific Lutheran University in a scrimmage game at PLU on Saturday, Sept. 13. Game time in Tacoma, Washington, is scheduled for 12 p.m. PDT.
