SOU downs Oklahoma City, Providence for 5th place at National Duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Ten different Raiders registered victories across two matches as No. 5-ranked Southern Oregon claimed fifth place Saturday at the NWCA-NAIA National Dual Championships, defeating No. 6 Oklahoma City 25-15 and No. 10 Providence (Mont.) 29-12 on Day 2 at the UNI-Dome.

The Raiders (9-1 overall) won four of five duals during their stay at the tournament and have now secured eight of their wins on the season against nationally-ranked teams.

They trailed 15-9 against Oklahoma City before stealing the final four matches in a row. Jackson Potts, ranked No. 18 at 174 pounds, won the first in a tiebreaker before No. 8 Adrian Chavez-Morales (184) gave the Raiders a lead with a third-round pin of No. 21 Bryce Milster. Asher Ruchti then won 13-3 against Omari Smith in a top-eight matchup, and Justin Tripp closed at heavyweight with a decision over Rafael Lovato.

The second matchup – SOU's second against Providence in two days – was a different story that saw the Raiders win their first four to take a 19-0 lead. No. 8 Isaac Hampton (125) started the run with a quality 3-0 decision over No. 11 Kobi Johnson, Zach Keinonen (133) kept it going with a first-round pin, and Tyler Rhue (141) dominated by major decision before No. 11 Kolton Malone scored an injury default.

Hampton and Rhue got two wins apiece on the day. Carson Gooley (197) stepped in with a 20-second pin in his first appearance of the tourney against Providence.

The Raiders are back home for three duals next week. They'll wrestle Friday at 4 p.m. against Westcliff (Calif.) and 6 p.m. against Corban, then host Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) at 5 p.m. Saturday.
