CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University women's soccer team has been named the Cascade Collegiate Conference Team of the Week after handing No. 4-ranked College of Idaho a 1-0 defeat Friday at Community Stadium.
The Mountaineers controlled much of the match against the nationally ranked Yotes, outshooting College of Idaho 14-6 and holding a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Eastern Oregon's defense limited the Yotes to just two shots on target, while goalkeeper Elysa Morse made two saves to preserve the shutout.
Sam Gjersvold provided the difference in the closing minutes of the first half. Following a free kick from Morse, Gjersvold collected the rebound near the 20-yard line and sent a long-range shot over the College of Idaho goalkeeper and into the net to give EOU a 1-0 lead.
The Mountaineers continued to generate scoring opportunities after halftime, with Peyton Jacaway and Ava Henkemeyer each coming close to adding an insurance goal. Eastern Oregon's defense held firm through the final whistle, securing the shutout and the upset victory.
The win improved the Mountaineers to 8-2-1 overall and 4-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play, moving them into a tie with College of Idaho atop the conference standings at the time of the matchup.
Eastern Oregon returns to action Friday, hosting Rocky Mountain College at 4 p.m. PT.
