KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Oliver Ausland became the first Southern Oregon University men's golfer to win two events in the same season last week, taking the Simpson Invitational by six shots at 11-under par, claiming the April 1 edition of NAIA Men's Golfer of the Week.
Ausland, from Grant's Pass, Ore., also won three weeks earlier at the RMC Intercollegiate, and he was 11-under par at Simpson (211).
At Simpson, Ausland used eight first-round birdies to take an early lead, wiping off three bogeys in the round to shoot 5-under 65, including three birdies in the first round's five closing holes. He opened the second round with a birdie, and after an even-par front nine, he posted a clean back nine with four birdies, marking his best nine of the event, 32, to shoot 4-under 68.
He overcame a rocky stretch of five holes, from No. 6 to No. 10, in the final round, making back-to-back birdies at No. 4 and No. 5 and three in his final six holes, including a birdie at the 18th to seal a six-stroke win, finishing with a final-round, 2-under par 70.
Southern Oregon is off until April 13-14, when the Raiders will travel to Portland and the Tournament of Knights, hosted by Warner Pacific (Ore.), at Glendoveer Golf Course.
