Marshall, Hess Highlight Concordia's Showing at Stanford Invitational

STANFORD, Calif.—Concordia’s Stephen Marshall earned a provisional mark in the triple jump and Annie Hess extended her school record in the discus to highlight Concordia track action at the Stanford Invitational on April 4-5.

Hess placed third overall in the top section of the women’s discus with a mark of 183-10 to improve her previous career best of 183-0. More importantly for the junior thrower, the mark, translated to 56.03 meters, eclipsed the U.S. Olympic Trials “B” qualifying standard of 56.00 meters. The “A” standard rests at an even 59 meters.

In the jumps, Stephen Marshall met the NAIA provisional qualifying barrier with a 46-4 1/4 leap in a third-place performance and Lakeesha Cadogan improved her provisional mark to an automatic distance by recording an 18-7 1/4 in the long jump.

Increasing his seasonal best in the hammer throw, Greg Schultz placed third overall in the A section of competitors with a 200-5 mark.

In the 1,500, freshman Alice Taylor established a new school record in the three and three-quarter lap event with 4:51.01 while Martin Romero-Clark turned in a sub four-minute race with a 3:57.96.

Romero-Clark’s time fell less than a second shy of the provisional standard of 3:57.60.

Curtis Parrish recorded the final NAIA automatic qualifier for Concordia with a 55.22 in the 400 hurdles and former NAIA national champion Lauren Sexton established a new personal record and scheel record with a 161-9 toss in the javelin.

“It was good to come down for some better weather,” head coach Randy Dalzell said, “We had our sights set on getting good marks while facing some tough competition and with another handful of national qualifiers we felt like the trip was a success.”
