In July of 2012 The CCC Council of Presidents' created the Presidents' Cup Academic Award. The award was designed to recognize outstanding overall academic performance. Each member institution could participate and was scored using two criteria (overall student athlete GPA (men and women) and total number of student athletes receiving academic all- conference honors.
In January of 2016 the CCC Council of Presidents' adopted a new process of recognition for Academic Excellence. Each school that achieves and overall combined GPA of 3.0 or better among their student athletes (men/women) that compete in sports that the CCC declares a champion in,and has 60% or higher of student-athletes who are eligible to receive Academic All-Conference ( sophomore standing/3.2 GPA) recognition do so, will be named a school of Academic Excellence and receive the Presidents' Cup Academic Excellence designation.
