Defense Keys Knight Win Over Boxers
PORTLAND, Ore. – Tough defense from the Knights held Pacific to 27.5 percent shooting in a 68-44 win over the Boxers in non-conference women’s basketball action at C.C. Perry Gym tonight.
Baskets were hard to come by for Pacific, which shot 14 of 51 for the game. WP registered their best shooting performance of the year at 47.3 percent.
A jumper from Cameryn Calhoun gave the Knights an early 12-4 lead in the game, and WP used an 11-4 run from there to post their largest lead of the first half at 23-8.
The visitors cut the Knight lead to seven at the 1:14 mark on a Kalei Frank score, but two Knight buckets were countered only by a Kristen Corrales free throw, giving WP the 10 point advantage after twenty minutes.
Coming out of the break Calhoun drained a three pointer, and the Knight lead never dipped below 11 points from that point. A Kristina Schumacher layup at 5:31 marked the largest Knight lead at 64-39.
Schumacher led the Knights in scoring with 15 points on 7-11 shooting from the field. Marissa Towry added 11 points, and Kelsey Mattsen cleaned the glass with 11 rebounds.
The Boxers were paced by Rochell Reeves-Howe who tallied 14 points. Paige Jensen grabbed 11 rebounds.
The Knights improve to 2-2 and head to Lacey, WA tomorrow to face St. Martin’s University. Pacific now stands 0-2.
