CU's Alex Tiefenthaler led all players with 29 points and 13 rebounds on Monday.
Concordia Stays Perfect with Holy Names Win
PORTLAND, Ore.— Despite hitting 65.5 percent from the floor in the first half, it took a strong defensive effort in the second as Concordia rolled to a 91-78 win over Holy Names in non-conference men’s basketball action on Monday night.
Holding just a four-point lead at the break with the score 44-40, Concordia held the Hawks to 30.2 percent shooting in the second half to improve to 6-0 on the season. Holy Names dropped to 1-5 overall.
Alex Tiefenthaler was dominating again for the Cavs, hitting 11 of 14 attempts from the floor while netting a game-high 29 points. The senior also collected a game-high 13 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
The Cavaliers had three more players reach double figures in the scoring column including 16 from Dustin Hiebert and 12 from Jason Holzwarth off the bench as the CU non-starters outperformed their counterparts 42-25.
“I was really pleased that we were able to clamp down in the second half,” Barbarick said. “We continue to find a way to win. We have some good depth and a lot of different guys have contributed to our success and that showed again tonight. I’ve been extremely happy with our team chemistry and how the guys have supported each other and that has played a huge role in us going undefeated going into Thanksgiving break.”
Holy Names was led by 23 points from David Scott and 15 points and nine rebounds by Johnas Street. The Hawks were outrebounded 43 to 35 but snared 19 offensive boards, including eight from Street, to more than double the Concordia total of seven offensive caroms.
Able to stay within striking distance due to 28 Concordia turnovers, Holy Names was able to cut the Cavalier lead to two with the score 42-40 right before the half, but a charging Jeff Sego took the ball down the length of the court with four seconds remaining to double the team’s advantage.
Concordia would post the first eight points of the second half to stake their first double-digit lead. HNU fought back to pull to within three via a Scott jumper with 12:57 to play, but the Cavs kept the Hawks at bay to pull out the 13-point win.
Concordia will next take the floor on Nov. 28 when it travels to face Simpson College in Redding, Calif., Opening tip is set for 4 p.m.
