OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team opened the conference season with a big road victory at The Evergreen State, 74-65.
The No. 23 Mountaineers picked up 23 points from Jordan Gregg. The senior made 10 of his 13 shots from the field and grabbed 11 rebounds. It was his fifth double double of the season as EOU improved to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
The NAIA Div. 2 leading scorer, Nate Menefee, scored 26 points and broke TESC’s all-time scoring record. Menefee tied the record of 1,704 points on a pull-up jumper with 1:48 to play, and broke it 16 seconds later with a three-pointer from just to the right of the top of the key.
He will now go to work extending a record that stands at 1709. A transfer from Warner Pacific University, Menefee is also marching up the Cascade Collegiate Conference charts with 2230 points scored while wearing the uniform of a conference school.
Steve Sawyers added 17 points for EOU, and Cody Thurmond chipped in 13. Julio Feliciano had 14 points and nine rebounds for Evergreen (5-4, 0-1).
The Geoducks began the season ranked 22nd in the country, but were held to 33 percent shooting from the field Friday. The halftime score was low with Eastern up, 23-21, but the second half both teams combined for 95 points.
The Mountaineers travel to Kirkland, Wash., to face Northwest University Saturday night. The Eagles stunned The College of Idaho Friday, 74-55. COI opened the season as the preseason conference favorite, but is now 2-4 overall.
In other CCC action from Friday, Concordia improved to 9-0 with an 81-64 road win at Southern. Corban defeated Northwest Christian at home, 70-65. No. 11 Oregon Tech defeated No. 5 Warner Pacific at home, 71-62.
