Southern Oregon Ends Northwest U's Streak
KIRKLAND, Wash. – Southern Oregon ended Northwest U.’s five game winning streak by defeating the Eagles 68-65 in Cascade Conference play tonight that saw a total of 56 fouls and 56 turnovers committed by the teams.
In a close first half that saw several ties and lead changes, Northwest U. would take the lead 18-12 on Erika Hornyak’s layup with 11:15 on the clock. NU would maintain a slim lead the remainder of the half as Jessalyn Jackson would score the layup and add a free throw to take a 30-22 lead with 5:03 to go until halftime. SOU’s Jamie Roupp’s jumper would pull SOU to within two points with 2:15 left in the half, but Alexa Breidenbach’s two free throws would give Northwest U. a 35-30 lead with 54 seconds to go to end the scoring for the first half.
Northwest U. would maintain their lead four minutes and 22 seconds into the half until SOU’s Krystal Smith’s jumper would tie the game at 41-41. After two more ties and lead changes, Emily Drivstuen would pull NU to within one point, 46-45, at the 12:52 mark with her driving layup and Jessica Wilkerson would give NU the lead once again with her two free throws 27 seconds later. The second half would see 9 ties and 9 lead changes as SOU would tie the score at 49-all on an Ashley Baker’s free throw with 10:49 to go in the game. After four more ties, Southern Oregon would take the lead for good with 3:55 in the contest on a Baker free throw and a jumper by Jackie Speer. NU would battle back to pull to within one point, 66-65, on Jessalyn Jackson’s two free throws, but Jackie Speer would clinch the victory for Southern Oregon with 24 seconds to go with her two charity tosses.
Northwest U. (9-6, 5-2 CCC) was led by Jessalyn Jackson's 15 points and 7 rebounds and Emily Drivstuen added 12 points and 8 boards for the Eagles who shot 36% from 2-point FG range tonight. The Eagles committed 30 turnovers and were whistled for 33 fouls.
Ashley Baker led Southern Oregon (14-5, 3-5 CCC) with her double-double and game high of 19 points and 13 rebounds. Emily Brookins added 11 points and Jamie Roupp dropped in 10 for the Raiders. Jackie Speer grabbed a game high 10 rebounds for SOU, but Northwest won the battle of the boards with a 54-59 margin. SOU shot 32% from 2-point range and 31% from the 3-point line.
