Ben Voogd helped NCU win for first time at C of I
CALDWELL, Idaho - Ben Voogd hit the front end of a 1-and-1 with five seconds remaining, lifting Northwest Christian to their first-ever win at The College of Idaho, toppling the Coyotes, 56-52, inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
The Beacons (7-14, 3-6 CCC) led nearly the entire game, holding the Coyotes to their lowest home output in 36 years – since The C of I dropped a 56-48 decision to Whitman during the 1973-74 season.
The Yotes (7-9, 3-6), who had a five-game home win streak snapped, held an 8-7 lead with 12-minutes left in the opening period, only to watch NCU score the next 14 points, taking the lead for good – as Kellen Spicer had five of his career-high 22 points.
Leading 35-24 at the break, the Beacons extended the margin to as many as 15 in the second half, before the Coyotes made a rally. Five-straight points by Craig McGee and a driving lay-up by Kelly McCarty cut the deficit to 53-49 with four minutes to go. The hosts would get within 55-52 on a Steve Peres free throw inside the final minute, before Voogd sealed the win with the free throw.
Spicer hit 4-of-7 from outside the arc in the win for NCU, with Cameron Marshall added 11 points and three blocks. Voogd had seven points, seven rebounds, and six assists for the Beacons.
McGee led the Yotes with his 27th career double-double, scoring 18 points with 11 rebounds. Both Peres and Noah Gottlieb had ten in the loss, as The C of I hit just 18-of-50 field goal attempts.
The Yotes hit the road next weekend, making the long trek to Southern Oregon for a Friday night tip-off at 7:30 p.m. (PT)
