Jessica Kuehlwien made six saves in SOU shutout win
CALDWELL, Idaho - Ashton Griffen headed home the lone goal of the match, as Southern Oregon made the most of their two shots in the contest to upend The College of Idaho, 1-0, in a Cascade Conference women's soccer game at Simplot Stadium.
A defensive bobble in the 25th minute by the Lady Yotes (7-6, 4-2 CCC) allowed the Raiders Denise Powell to collect the ball on the end line left of the six-yard box, chipping a ball into the area - finding the head of Griffen, who placed the ball into the left corner of the net.
Southern (10-4-1, 4-1 CCC) came up big on the defensive end to keep the hosts off the board, as Jessica Kuehlwien made six saves in the shutout. The Yotes had an early chance in the fourth minute, as Jamie Reichel got inside the box, but her drive from the right side was deflected by Kuehlwien off the crossbar and out. In the 54th minute, Reichel played a great cross to Erika Mouritsen inside the six-yard - but the senior slipped on her shot with the empty net.
The Yotes had their best chance in the 81st minute, as Mouritsen played a cross over Kuehlwien's head, finding the foot of Chelsea Heffner inside the six-yard box, but the junior clanked the sitter off the crossbar and a rebound attempts from Macy Egerman and Kayla Bigelow were turned away by the SOU netminder.
The C of I held an 11-2 edge in shots - with Southern's second shot of the afternoon coming with just one minute remaining in the match.
The Lady Yotes return to action next weekend with road games at Corban and Northwest Christian.
