Warner Pacific Hands Concordia First CCC Defeat
BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore. – Two offside calls nullified Concordia goals late in the second half as Warner Pacific defeated the Cavaliers 1-0 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference men’s soccer game at Delta Park on Saturday.
Warner Pacific improved to 4-5-1 overall, 4-2-0 in the CCC, with the win. With the loss, the Cavaliers’ record fell to 8-2-0 overall and 5-1-0 in conference play.
The match remained scoreless until the middle of the second half, when Brandon Tatum sent a cross from the left side to Alija Sacirovic in front of the goal. Sacirovic headed the ball to the right side of Concordia goalkeeper Claudio Lazar (Ploiesti, Romania/Minai Viteazul H.S.) for the deciding score.
Lazar tied a season high with seven saves while allowing his first goal in over 500 minutes of play in front of the net. Warner Pacific goalkeeper Sean Ervin finished the match with four saves.
Following Sacirovic’s score in the 69th minute, both teams started to get more physical. During a four minute stretch from the 78th minute to the 82nd minute, two players from each team received yellow cards.
The Cavaliers nearly squared the match at 1-1 with Facundo Dipascuale (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Lakeridge H.S.) shooting into the net in the 76th minute moments after an offside call and again in the 60th minute following a free kick where CU defender Shaonovan Wilson (Jackson Town, Jamaica/Cedric Titus H.S.) headed the ball past the WPC keeper only to be waiver off after being flagged for being offside.
Concordia had six corner kicks to zero for Warner Pacific, but the Cavaliers were plagued by six offside calls, including two that canceled potential goals in the final 20 minutes. The Knights outshot Concordia 10-4 in the first half, but CU tallied a 7-3 edge in attempts in the second 45 minutes.
Dipascuale led the Cavaliers with three shots in the contest, two on goal.
The Cavaliers had won seven consecutive matches – including five straight shutouts – prior to Saturday’s loss. CU returns to action Oct. 9, when they host Corban University at Delta Park in a CCC match scheduled for 1 p.m. The same day, Warner Pacific will travel to College of Idaho to face the Yotes in Caldell,
