Eagles Sweep the Beacons
KIRKLAND, Wash. - The Northwest University Eagles defeated Northwest Christian Univ. tonight as they swept the Beacons, 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-21) to win their 11th game of the season and boost their conference mark to 6-4.
The Eagles took a commanding 14-6 lead in the first set and an Anu Akamine kill put NU up 19-7 as they put away the Beacons, 25-10.
The second set was a mirror image of the first as NU jumped out 15-4 capped off by Sarah Stoker’s kill. Akamine accounted for the final five Eagle points of the set with two kills and three straight services aces to end the set for NU.
In the third and final set, it was the Beacons jumping out to the lead as they found themselves in front 12-8. But the Eagles would slowly creep back into the set as Sarah Stoker’s kill and a NCU attack error would knot the score at 17-17. After another tie at 18-all, Northwest Christian would retake the lead, 19-18 on Janel Fetters’ kill, but a Beacon service error would tie the score once again at 19-19. With the set tied at 21-all, NU would capitalize on three NCU errors and a kill to put away the match.
Anu Akamine led the Eagles (11-6, 6-4 CCC) with a match high 13 kills (.765 hitting avg.), 4 service aces and 7 digs while setter Lauryn Ernster had a match high 29 assists for the night. Outside hitter Lauren Holtz added 8 kills and 9 digs and libero Heather Shulke led the team with her 11 digs. Kacie Simpson had 3 service aces for the match.
Northwest Christian (5-13, 1-9 CCC) was led by Janel Fetters 10 kills and Cori Wallace had a team high 24 assists for the Beacons. Fetters added 8 digs and 2 service aces to her totals.
“It was nice to make up the victory from the last time we played them in Eugene,” commented Eagle head coach, Jessie Dietrich. “Anu had a great match getting thirteen kills in two games without any errors.”
The Eagles remain at home Saturday night as they take on Corban University in the NU Pavilion at 7 p.m. Northwest Christian heads south to Olympia to play the Evergreen State College in Cascade Conference play.
