BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore. – Concordia jumped out to a 24-point halftime lead and never looked back as the Cavaliers defeated Simpson 84-62 in non-conference men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at Cavalier Gymnasium.

With the win, Concordia improves to 3-0 this season. Simpson falls to 0-4 with the loss.

A pair of three-pointers in the first three minutes gave Simpson the early 6-2 lead, but it would be short-lived as Concordia scored the next nine points to earn the 11-6 advantage. The Red Hawks’ next basket pulled them within three at 11-8, but that would be the closest they would come for the rest of the contest.

Concordia used a 9-2 run to pull ahead by 10 points, 20-10 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half. The Cavaliers outscored the Red Hawks 32-18 the rest of the period to take a 52-48 halftime lead.

The Cavaliers out-rebounded the Red Hawks 28-8 in the first half and scored 12 points at the free throw line to none for the Hawks. CU connected on 18 of 31 shot attempts from the field for a 58.1 shooting percentage.

In the second half, Concordia saw its lead bounce between 31 and 22 points, as Simpson outscored CU 34-32 in the period. By the end of the game, nine Cavaliers had scored and 12 had grabbed a rebound.

Four players scored in double-figures for Concordia, highlighted by Ryan Miller’s 18 points. Miller (Vancouver, Wash./Portland Christian H.S.) set a new career-high, posting double-digit points for the first time at Concordia. Jourdan Sweeney (Los Angeles, Calif./St. Bernard H.S.) tallied 17 points, while Kevan West (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie H.S.) added 12 points and eight rebounds to tie Daniel LeFlore (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard H.S.) for the team-lead in boards. Adam Herman (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie H.S.) finished with 10 points as well.

Concordia finished the game with 50 rebounds to Simpson’s 29, and the Cavs shot 51.7 percent (30-of-58) from the field. The Red Hawks connected on 37.5 percent (24-of-64) of their shots.

Concordia returns to action on Nov. 18 when the Cavs host Willamette in a non-conference game scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
