Northwest Cruises Past Puget Sound
KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University held the high scoring Loggers to 26 second half points as they defeated the University of Puget Sound, 110-58, in a non-conference contest tonight in the NU Pavilion.
UPS jumped out an early lead on 6 straight points by senior Aaron Edwards, but two straight 3-pointers by NU's Jordan Call and Tyson Christie would give NU the lead, 10-8 (16:29). Puget Sound's Edric Egberuare's jumper would tie the game at 13-all with 15:29 left in the half, but that would be the closest the Loggers woulf come the remainder of the game. The Eagles led 54-32 at the half, shooting 62% from 2-point range and 79% from 3-point distance (7-9) while holding UPS to 34% shooting and 24% from beyond the 3-point arc.
Senior Greg Peters (Belmont, St. Vincent) came off the Northwest U. (3-1) bench to register a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Daley Landon (Waterville, Wash.) scored 14 points going 3 for 3 from the 3-point line, junior Jordan Call (Kirkland, Wash.) contributed 12 points and junior Ahmaad Cook (Los Angeles, Calif.) dropped in 10 points for the Eagles. NU shot an impressive 68% for the game and made 77% of their 3-point attempts (10 for 13). The Eagles held the rebounding edge, 46-25. Bench scoring was important for the Eagles as NU got 62 points from their bench to 23 for UPS.
Puget Sound (0-1) was led by senior Aaron Edwards (Atlanta, GA) and junior Kaleb Shelton (Tacoma, Wash.) who both scored 12 points on the night. Ryan Hoff (Edmonds, Wash.) scored 9 points for the Loggers who shot a cool 32% for the night and 21% from 3-point range while making 60% of their free throws.
“This game was a credit to our depth and our bench,” commented Eagle Head Coach John Van Dyke. “We had great contributions and a lift from the guys coming off the bench tonight who gave us 62 points. It was a good team win.”
Northwest U. now travels to Cheney, Wash. to play Eastern Washington Univ. on Thursday night in an exhibition contest before heading to Newberg, Ore. and another preseason game with George Fox on Saturday night.
