OAKLAND, Calif. – Three Cal State Maritime players fouled out as Concordia outlasted the Keelhaulers in overtime, 84-81, at the Cavaliers’ opening game at the Holy Names Thanksgiving Classic Friday night.
With the win, Concordia snaps a three-game skid to improve to 4-3 this season. The Cavaliers held a narrow 36-33 lead at halftime, but the teams were tied at 71 apiece at the end of regulation.
Concordia used an overwhelming free throw disparity to its advantage in pulling out the close win. The Cavaliers attempted 37 shots at the charity stripe in the contest, sinking 30 of the attempts for an 81.1 percentage. Cal State Maritime attempted only 12 total shots from the free throw line, making six for a 50 percent clip.
Gage Aker’s 23 points led a group of four CU players with double-figure point totals. Aker (Portland, Ore./Wilson H.S.) also led the team with six assists and shot a game-high 11-of-14 at the charity stripe. Adam Herman (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie H.S.) tallied 17 points and seven rebounds, while Kevan West (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie H.S.) added 15 points and Jourdan Sweeney (Los Angeles, Calif./St. Bernard H.S.) totaled 13 points and a team-high nine boards.
Josh Greenwell tied Aker for the game-high point total with 23 for the Keelhaulers. Michael Weimer’s 10 rebounds led both teams.
The Cavaliers return to action Nov. 27 when they play tournament host Holy Names in a game scheduled for 6 p.m.
