Cavalier Men Fall to Holy Names 95-81

OAKLAND, Calif. –
Jordan Sweeney scored 33 points, but Holy Names pulled away in the second half to hand Concordia a 95-81 loss Saturday night at the Holy Names Thanksgiving Classic.
The loss drops Concordia’s record to 4-4 heading into conference play next weekend.
Concordia held a narrow lead for the majority of the first 11 minutes of the game, reaching a game-high advantage of five points several times in that stretch. Holy Names tied the contest at 26-26 with 9:19 remaining in the first half, and the Cavaliers would not lead for the remainder of the contest.
Holy Names looked like it might pull away in the final nine minutes of the period, reaching a 10-point lead at 43-33 with 4:13 remaining in the half before the Cavs closed the half on a 17-8 run to pull within one at 51-50.
Concordia shot 52.8 percent (19-of 36) in the first half compared to Holy Names’ 41.7 shooting percentage (20-of-48). The Hawks held a 24-17 rebounding advantage in the period.
The Cavaliers remained close early in the second half, trailing by as few as one point at 55-54 four minutes into the period, but a 7-0 run gave the Hawks a bit of breathing room at 62-54. Concordia pulled back to within five on two different occasions, including 71-66 with 9:49 left to play, but Holy Names scored the next 10 points to extend its advantage to 15 and take control.
Concordia out-shot Holy Names from the field, 45.5 percent (30-of-66) to 44.3 percent (35-79), but the Hawks made 14 of 26 shots from beyond the three-point line, while the Cavs made only four of 13 attempts from beyond the arc. The Hawks out-rebounded the Cavaliers 41-31 in the contest.
Holy Names’ David Scott tied Sweeney (Los Angeles, Calif./St. Bernard H.S.) for the game-high point total of 33. Kevan West (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie H.S.) scored 17 points and Drew Preuninger (Camas, Wash./Camas H.S.) added 14 for the Cavs, while Sweeney grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
The Cavaliers open Cascade Conference play Dec. 3 when Southern Oregon comes to Cavalier Gymnasium for a game scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
