OAKLAND, Calif. – Five Cavaliers reached double-figures in the scoring column as Concordia defeated Cal State Maritime 97-64 Friday afternoon in its first game at the Holy Names Thanksgiving Classic.
The win, Concordia’s seventh in a row, improves the Cavaliers’ record to 7-3 this season.
Concordia shot 56.9 percent from the field (37-of-65) and 65.2 percent from beyond the three-point line (15-of-23), while limiting the Keelhaulers to 35.3 percent shooting (24-of-68), including 27.3 percent from beyond the arc (6-of-22).
The Cavaliers jumped out to a 47-26 halftime lead on the strength of 18-of-34 shooting in the period. Concordia reached a higher level in the second period, outscoring Cal State Maritime 50-38 and draining 19 of 31 shot attempts from the field (61.3 percent).
Rachel Scarpelli (Troutdale, Ore./Reynolds H.S.) led a balanced offensive attack for CU with 18 points in 23 minutes. Courtney May (Napavine, Wash./Napavine H.S.) followed up her triple-double against George Fox with 12 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals in a team-high 26 minutes of playing time.
Megan Padilla (Sacramento, Calif./Christian Brothers H.S.) scored 14 points and Danielle Clauson (Edmonds, Wash./Kings H.S.) added 13 points and six rebounds in 17 minutes of court time. Sarah Eischen (Hillsboro, Ore./Hillsboro H.S.) tallied 10 points for CU.
Joyce Koloa led the Keelhaulers with a game-high 24 points and 15 rebounds on 11-of-22 shooting.
Concordia returns to action Nov. 27 when CU plays tournament host Holy Names at 4 p.m.
