PORTLAND, Ore. –Dustin Hiebert made a three-pointer eight seconds into the game and the Cavaliers never looked back as the Concordia men’s basketball team opened the 2010-11 season with an 82-50 nonconference win against Multnomah University Tuesday night at Cavalier Gymnasium.

The Cavaliers shot 47.6 percent from the field in starting the season 1-0, led by
Jourdan Sweeney’s (Los Angeles/St. Bernard H.S.) 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Multnomah’s Gian Cook led all scorers with 24 points, playing all 40 minutes for the Lions, who fell to 1-2 on the season.

An 11-7 CU lead four minutes into the game turned into a 20-7 lead as the Cavs scored nine straight points to take command of the game with 14:44 remaining in the first period. The Lions never got within 10 points of the Cavaliers after that.

Adam Herman’s (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie H.S.) layup with just over six minutes left in the half finished a 14-0 run for Concordia, pushing the lead to 38-13. A pair of three-pointers by Cook helped the Lions pull to 45-28 at the break.

Concordia posted another 14-0 streak early in the second period, increasing its lead to 31 points at 61-30 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the contest. Cook’s steal and layup for the Lions ended the Cavs’ streak.

Concordia again pulled ahead by 31 on
Gage Aker’s (Portland, Ore./Wilson H.S.) layup with 9:13 remaining, and the Cavs’ lead hung between 31 and 36 the rest of the way.

Aker posted a game-high 10 rebounds in 28 minutes played for the Cavaliers.
Kevan West (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie H.S.) added 17 points and nine rebounds on a perfect shooting night, 5-of-5 from the field and 7-of-7 from the free throw line. As a team, Concordia shot 17-of-19 on free throws.

Multnomah finished the contest shooting 29 percent from the floor (18-of-62), including 5-of-32 from three-point range, and 9-of-19 from the charity stripe. The Lions’ Chris Haynes scored 11 points and led the visiting team with seven rebounds.

Concordia returns to action Oct. 12, when the Cavaliers host California Maritime at Cavalier Gymnasium in a game scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
