Naomi Reimer had 18 kills in Lady Yotes win at NAIA Championships
SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Naomi Reimer recorded her seventh career triple-double, leading The College of Idaho to an upset of tenth-seeded Taylor University, 25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 25-21, in Pool C play at the 2010 NAIA Volleyball National Championships, presented by the Siouxland Sports Medicine Foundation inside the Tyson Events Center.
Reimer, playing her first full match in a complete rotation since early September, recorded a match-high 18 kills, 17 assists, and ten digs, leading the Lady Yotes (24-5) to their first win over a Top-10 team since defeating No. 10 ranked Cedarville (Ohio) in 2006.
With the win, The C of I joins Fresno Pacific atop Pool C after Day 1 of the tournament, as FPU defeated Shawnee State in three sets.
The Coyotes used a 6-1 push in the opening set to break open a 10-8 score, using four attack errors by the Trojans (34-7), the champions of the Mid-Central Collegiate Conference. The C of I would build a 22-13 lead on a combo-block by Nathy Neres and Liz Myers, using a Sarah Harris spike to cap the set win.
Set 2 saw the Yotes sprint out to a 12-5 lead on the strength of two kills each from Harris, Reimer, and Lauren Bourgeau. TU closed within 18-14 on a Rachel Kizer kill, but a pair of Neres spikes in a 4-0 push put The C of I up two sets to none.
The Coyotes had a chance to close out Set 3, getting four Ciciley Fox kills in an opening 7-2 run – holding a 20-17 lead late in the period. However, Bethany Beck recorded five kills in an 8-2 push to close the frame for the Indiana school.
In Set 4, Taylor jumped out to a 7-5 lead on a Kizer spike, but the Coyotes got three Reimer kills in a 10-2 run to build a 15-9 lead. TU closed within 24-21, but a Harris kill ended the match.
Fox had 13 kills in the win for the Lady Yotes, with Harris adding 12 kills and four blocks, and Bourgeau recording nine kills and four blocks. Madie Machurek recorded her 12th double-double of the year with 32 assists and 13 digs, with Whitney Owen leading all players with 22 digs.
Kelsey Pritchard and Beck each had 14 kills to lead the Trojans, with Kizer adding 11 kills and a team-high 20 digs. Setter Betsy Brown notched 38 assists and 12 digs in the loss.
